Chocolate Cake Instructions
  1. Prepare Chocolate Simple Syrup by combining water, sugar, and cocoa powder in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Cool before using.
  2. Make Cake Batter by whisking together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add warm water, sour cream, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Blend until smooth.
  3. Bake Layers by greasing and flouring two 9-inch round pans. Divide and smooth batter between the pans. Bake at 350°F for 22-26 minutes.
  4. Cool Layers in the pans for 15 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  5. Make Buttercream by beating softened butter until creamy, adding cocoa, salt, and vanilla. Gradually mix in powdered sugar and cream until light and fluffy. Fold in melted dark chocolate.
  6. Assemble Cake by brushing chocolate syrup on each layer, spreading buttercream between layers, and covering the cake with remaining buttercream.
  7. Final Frosting involves smoothing the buttercream over the entire cake and pressing mini chocolate chips into the sides.
