  • 1 pound ground beef or ground chicken/turkey
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated or ground ginger if necessary
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese 5-Spice Powder substitute with cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and fennel
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce or tamari gluten-free with tamari
  • 1 tablespoon Thai chili sauce adjust for desired spiciness
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil or olive oil if unavailable
For the Wrap
  • 8 small flour tortillas or rice paper rice paper is gluten-free
For the Fresh Ingredients
  • 2 Persian cucumbers, julienned other cucumber varieties can be used
  • 1 cup fresh cilantro
  • 1 cup Thai basil or Italian basil as a substitute
  • 3 green onions, chopped both green and white parts are usable
  • ½ cup roasted peanuts, chopped can use other nuts if desired

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, Thai chili sauce, sesame oil, and Chinese 5-spice powder. Whisk and set aside.
  2. Cook the beef: Heat a skillet, add ground beef, then garlic and ginger. Stir for about 2 minutes until fragrant and beef is no longer pink.
  3. Glaze the beef: Pour the sauce over cooked beef in the skillet. Stir well and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until thickened.
  4. Warm the tortillas: Warm tortillas in a skillet for 30 seconds on each side or prepare rice paper accordingly.
  5. Assemble the rolls: Lay each tortilla flat, add beef mixture, cucumbers, green onions, cilantro, and basil. Roll tightly.
  6. Serve with dipping sauce: Mix additional soy sauce and chili sauce if desired, serve rolls warm.
