Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and ground cloves.
  3. Cream together the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  4. Add the large eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients and sour cream, starting and ending with dry ingredients.
  6. Fold in the finely chopped apples and nuts if using.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top. Sprinkle turbinado sugar on top.
  8. Bake for 50-60 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
  9. Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
